Abe Opperman was born in Zastron in the Free State on 15 March 1961. He grew up in Ficksburg on a farm with a typical English garden, surrounded by the beauty of the magnificent landscapes that has inspired him ever since.
His childhood memories are filled with freedom, wide open spaces and the dramatic mountains typical of that area. At the age of 12 he started growing orchids and his passion for “those magnificent beings” – as he puts it – has followed him all his life.
Abe matriculated in 1979 and completed his military service two years later. Thereafter he enrolled for and completed a Diploma in Fine Art and Fashion Design at the then Technikon Pretoria.
Driven by his passion for nature, flowers and colours, he started a career in floristry and then opened Hoy P’Loy 21 years ago. His shop has been a huge source of inspiration and growth in his life and career.
Besides nature, music and people have always moved his spirit and play a big role in his life. His first solo exhibition in 2010 was inspired by his childhood, his deep love for beauty, and the concept of flight.
There is great responses to the freedom he portrays in his work as well as the innocence of the characters he brings to life with his art.
